COCA COLA AND PEPSICO MAKE SWEEPING SUSTANABILITY COMMITMENTS.
- Plastic is banned across the globe.
- Coca-Cola and PepsiCo need an alternative over plastic .
- Coca-Cola leading with PlantBottle.
- Pepsico aims to produce fully recyclable bottles till 2025.
Human beings have become careless about our planet to the point of ignorance and many of them can be seen throwing plastic bottles everywhere after use. Plastic takes almost 1000 years to completely degrade and this means that every plastic that has ever been made still exists.
Big Companies like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo produce almost 1.7 billion bottles per day which makes them world’s largest producers of plastic trash ! But the ban on usage of plastic, has created awareness amongst us humans and many eco friendly solutions are brought into existence.
The soft drink giants Coca-Cola and Pepsico have abandoned the plastics industry this year. They have made some serious sustainability adherence.
“Companies understand that they cannot publicly say they want to end plastic pollution, while financially supporting an association that lobbies for our continued reliance on throwaway plastics,” said Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaign Director John Hocevar. “This is a victory for every person that spoke up and asked Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to put their money where their mouths are and tell the Plastics Industry Association to stop preventing plastic reduction efforts.”
But the plastic industry association has ties to the American Progressive Bag Alliance, which encourages states to make plastic bans illegal.
They said Greenpeace is responsible for companies' withdrawal from the group.
They all are aware that several prominent brands that are members of the association have been targeted by a persistent Greenpeace activist campaign to pressure them to leave our association which is quite unfortunate.
The beverage giants have joined other companies like household products company Clorox, medical device firm Becton Dickinson and hygiene and cleanings tech company Ecolab, which ended memberships with the Plastics Industry Association last year.
A PepsiCo spokesperson said that the company initially joined the Plastics Industry Association to learn about material innovation, but will end its membership at the end of the year since it “does not participate in the policy advocacy work of the association or its subsidiaries.”
In lieu of plastic, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have been searching for alternatives that are easier to recycle, such as aluminium. Recently, PepsiCo revealed it would start replacing its Aquafina plastic bottles with aluminium cans at restaurants and fast-food chains across the nation.
Coca-Cola produced 3.3 million tons of plastic in 2017.PepsiCo did not disclose how much plastic it sells.
But by 2025, PepsiCo aims to make all packaging for its products fully recyclable and biodegradable. The company also has vowed to reinvent their packaging for their plastic water bottles by using 25% recycled material. Tackling plastic waste is one of the top priorities was said by the PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta . They are addressing the issue by reducing , recycling and reinventing their packaging .
